DESBOROUGH SURGERY HIGH STREET DESBOROUGH

New Surgery Premises – 750m2    Winners of Civic Trust Award

Numerous feasibility studies were undertaken for this surgery before it was suggested that complete demolition of an existing Victorian building would create a site that could provide suitable space that in itself could be integrated within the existing surgery.  This option was strongly resisted as the Victorian building was a most important feature in the High street of Desborough.  Integrated discussions between GPs, Health Authority, planners and the local residents acknowledged that health care provision must take priority but any new development on the site had to reflect the existing architecture of the High Street, incorporate period detailing and provide for a high calibre designed building to compensate for the loss of such an important Victorian landmark and still achieve premises that provided the correct areas for compliance with NHS guidelines and the Disability Discrimination Act.

The use of energy efficient heating and lighting system and traditional materials provide for a relatively low maintenance building.

BROADSHIRE HEALTH CENTRE CARTERTON

New Surgery Premises – 800m2

This new facility consists of a six General Practitioner Surgery, a Pharmacy and a self contained Dental Unit.

The practice had to develop, design and construct a new facility to comply fully with the NHS Estates Guidance for surgery design, allow for integration of other primary care providers, additional healthcare for dental services and pharmaceutical supply, be designed so as to follow the natural course of the roundabout and associated estate roads, be further designed so as to be in the Oxfordshire Vernacular’ and not to exceed budget.  A further requirement was to provide a healthcare facility that was adequate and could be extended in the future.

Despite a restrictive budget the building has been constructed using traditional materials requiring extremely low maintenance.
